They had been married for ten years, but as the mist began to roll off the mountains, Mark realized he was looking at a stranger. The "lake house" was a rental, a secluded cabin with no cell service and no neighbors for three miles. It was the perfect place to fall back in love, or the perfect place to disappear.
"Why did you bring us here, Mark?" Sarah turned finally. The moonlight caught her eyes, and for a second, they looked as cold as the depths below her.
"I thought we needed the air," he said, his heart hammering against his ribs. "And I thought you might want to tell me about the house on Blackwood Drive."
Sarah froze. The wind picked up, whistling through the pine needles. The distance between them on the dock felt like a canyon.
"I don't know what you're talking about," she whispered.
"The key, Sarah. I found it."
A slow, unsettling smile spread across her face—one that didn't reach her eyes. "Oh, Mark. You were never supposed to be the curious one. That was always my job."
She took a step toward him, and Mark realized too late that the floorboards beneath him had been sawed through. As the wood groaned and gave way, the last thing he saw was the calm, dark water waiting to swallow the truth.
